How I Ended Up Here...

Prior to coding I worked in insurance for a decade. I became burnt out and realized I wanted a change. Changing careers in your 30’s is difficult however, when you have bills coming in each month. Not to mention this was (and still is) at a time where mass layoffs have been rocking the industry. Despite the pessimistic job prospects, I decided to take a leap of faith anyway and enroll in NBCC’s Software Dev program.

Looking back, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I just finished the fist year of a two-year program. I don’t miss insurance but more importantly I enjoy coding and have a desire to continue progressing down this path.

A little bit more about me…

Where were you born?

I was born in Saint John, NB to Stephen and Eileen Linton. I have one older brother, Patrick.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in in the Northern town of Dalhousie, NB after we moved there for work at the local pulp and paper mill while my mother was a school teacher. I lived there from the time I was one year old up until eighteen, when the mill shutdown permanently.

Did you play sports growing up?

I loved playing sports when I was growing up. Never much of an athlete, but what I lacked in physical prowess I made up for with determination and heart. I played basketball throughout school, shot competitive archery, and golfed at the Restigouche Golf & Country Club in the summers.

Who introduced you to programming?

Funny enough I took an introduction to Comp Sci at Mount Allison University with Dr. Laurie Ricker when I was completing my undergrad. It wasn’t until years later however, that I saw the potential behind coding as a cereer.

When did you get the coding bug?

I think my aha moment was listening to a David Bombal podcast titled “Computer Science Isn’t Programming // How to Become a Master Programmer // Featuring Dr Chuck”.

How did you start programming?

I had built a personal PC for myself as a hobby project and then wanted to take it a step further. I played around with CodeCademy but one the pandemic hit I jumped into WP website development. From there I just kept going down the rabbit hole until I decided to take NBCC Software Development program to really dive in.

Do you have a significant other?

I have a beautiful girlfriend, Courtney, who supports me throughout my journey getting into coding full time.

Do you have any pets?

We have a Westie, Vega, who runs the show and a Husky/Pitbull mix, Zuko who loves to make new friends.

What are you hobbies?

I enjoy golfing in the summer time. I’ve caddied the last three years at the Omnium NB Explore Open in Mactaquac, NB as well. I’m also a member of the Fredericton Fish and Game Club and like to get outdoors whenever I can.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Looking back I think I’m most proud of the things that really pushed and tested me to the point where I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to achieve them. I won the national for Archery in 2004 for my age division after overcoming a bad bout of target panic. I won my first boxing match 12 weeks after I started training in 2007. I graduated from Mount Allison with a BA majoring in Commerce. I also travelled solo to Banff AB in 2012-13 and then again to SE Asia in 2015.

What goals do you have?

I want to become a master programmer and pass on what I know to others who are looking to get into the industry.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Coding… something…somewhere.

Back to where it began

I think everyone should travel and explore the world around them at least once. My motto has always been to get it in while young and healthy because you never know if you’ll get the chance to later on in life.
